Rethinking Educational Tools for the Digital Age

A Reputation for Excellence

For over 30 years, Try Group Inc has been providing tutoring for Japanese students and have earned a reputation for academic excellence. Throughout the years, they’ve helped thousands of students, from elementary to high school, access a range of education services. And it’s not just about tutoring. The company puts together teaching plans for each student, taking into account their strengths and weaknesses. Of course, with recent innovations in education, and with the explosion of online learning tools, Try wanted to create an online video learning service. One that was fully interactive and designed for both tutors and students alike.

Education First

Try originally started with online video lessons via a web browser. It worked well but certain things were missing. Together, we identified a list of functions that would find their way into the final app. These include the ability to view a script of the class, a cool feature that lets students ask questions by shaking their phone, and an easily searchable database with access to relevant textbook titles and resources. With such a range of tools and services on offer, we had to ensure that the app was clear, easy to understand, and direct. Qualities that have made Try such a trusted and reliable service in the education sector.

Learning Tools for the Digital Age

We knew the success of the Try app would lie in a smooth and seamless user experience. Ultimately, the most important thing was to make sure that students got access to quality teaching. Our designers made this the focus of their approach and ensured that student support was just a click away. And it has worked. The numbers don’t lie: since the release of the app, over a million new members have signed up for the service. With this new system in place, Try will continue to build on its reputation, helping students of every level get the tools and encouragement they need to realise their academic potential.

In 2021, UK’s CVC Capital Partners has acquired Try Group for about 110 billion yen ($976 million).
