The Ultimate Guiding Hand for a Visit to the Met

A Timeless Institution

The Met is not just an art museum. It is an institution. A monument of cultural achievement. A symbol of artistic excellence around the world. Needless to say, anything designed for them would have to live up to that immaculate reputation. Monstarlab embraced that challenge when The Met approached them to build their first Android app, with award-winning results.

Millions of Masterpieces

A visit to the Met can be an intimidating experience. The sheer scale of the place is almost inconceivable. There are more than 2 million works in its permanent collection, and 2 million square feet of gallery space. Walking into the Met is like walking into a catalog of humanity’s artistic achievements through the ages. So, naturally, visitors need a guiding hand. This comes in the form of an app to help them book tickets and plan their trip. But with so many departments, so many individual works of art, the app should also provide information and a map. The Monstarlab team took the Met’s innovative iPhone app, translated it to Google’s Material Design paradigm, and built it for Android. Monstarlab improved the usability of the original design based on careful research, and added powerful indoor mapping functionality to guide users on their journey through art history.

A Fitting Tribute

Since its launch, the app has helped millions of visitors navigate the hallowed halls of the Met. Monstarlab was so successful at capturing the essence of this great museum, the Met asked Monstarlab to manage both the Android and iOS versions. With a simple, elegant layout, the app is easy to navigate, while making the Met itself easy to navigate, too. It does all of this without skimping on information or access to resources. A fitting tribute to such a cherished institution.
