Empowering ostomy patients through medically compliant digital solutions
When innovation and technology meet behavioral design
Living with an ostomy bag or catheter can be tough. Coloplast wanted to make things a little easier. Their idea was to build an app to help with day-to-day maintenance. A digital solution for establishing routines, ensuring medical compliance, and generally creating a more cost-effective system of care. The app was to work as an accompaniment to physical products. Through notifications, nudging behaviour, and data tracking, the app would be built to encourage healthier habits. Users would get more benefits from the product, making them less likely to be hospitalised, and, ultimately see a marked improvement in their quality of life.
An agile and iterative process
When they approached Nodes, Coloplast stressed medical compliance and user engagement as the ultimate goals for the project. Together, they built prototypes for an Ostomy Care pilot app and a Catheter Care pilot app. The prototypes were also designed in collaboration with behavioural experts and medical professionals, as well as the users themselves. Then they did high-level user testing, focusing on user engagement. This was key. These solutions were designed to assist with established routines, while encouraging, healthier, and more medically compliant behaviour. Therefore, designing solutions based purely on technical expertise wasn’t enough. It was all about the lived experience of every user.
The pilot is currently being evaluated and the results already indicate a high level of user engagement. This wouldn’t be possible without data from ongoing user engagement testing. Almost half of all users said the tools make them feel more in control, and they find it easier to follow routines. Users are generally satisfied with the apps. More than 80% would recommend. But they continue to give lots of feedback, identifying where improvements can be made.
The results are promising. They show that an agile and progressive approach has been beneficial in creating the right digital solution. User engagement and satisfaction is, of course, a priority. So, moving forward, feedback and data will be instrumental in building new and improved routine tools.
